The University pays much attention to the solving of regional problems. By the Resolutions of the head of Region Administration our University became the main establishment for realizing the development of the region programs "Cooperation among industrial enterprises", "Energy and resource saving technologies, improvement of construction-technological indexes and the quality of the industrial production of the national economy", "Program of small business support on the territory of Ulyanovsk region" and the main developer of the large projects such as "Transport - 2000" and "Electronic system of operative help".
Our University conducts works on realizing region technical programs with municipal enterprises "Ulyanovsk-Vodokanal", "Ulyanovsk-Energo", "Ulyanovsk-Avtodor", using 500 mln rubles annually, that are directed to the solving problems of resource economy, improvement of keeping environment industry problems".
USTU traditionally pays much attention to the development of new information technologies.
A technological park "Ulyanovsk Technopark" was created on the base of the University and works actively. It unites more than 20 of small innovative firms and actively helps to develop the innovation enterprise and small business in the region. Technopark has prepared more than 100 business plans of the innovative projects, 32 of which, with the amount of financing of more than 2.0 billion rubles, have been realized.
"Ulyanovsk Technopark" tooks part in the development of "Small business support program in Ulyanovsk region in 1998-99", develops the region expert system and system of escorting of the investment projects, creates the investment atlas of Ulyanovsk region.
What's more, we develop publishing activity in our University.
There was finished an organizing work for initiating the University's edition "Venetz", published 7 monographs and 4 scientific article collections, there was begun the publishing of the magazine "Vestnic USTU".
There are seven Higher Educational Institutions in Ulyanonsk, including USTU, many museums, historical places and monuments, libraries, two theatres (Drama Theater and Puppet Theater), cinemas, Actor's House, Palaces of Culture, Concert Halls, students clubs and sports clubs.
We pay much attention to organization of student's free time. There are a lot of clubs, a museum, a newspaper, concerts, competitions, expositions, cinema-hall, amateur perfomances, fund "Lepta". The most popular club is "POLECKS", that has a concert hall at its disposal. It contains 7 amateur art clubs. Many students take part in show-competitions, dancings, different concerts, festivals organized by club "POLECKS".
We have the newspaper "Universitetskaya panorama", that helps to organize free time of students and through this newspaper you can learn a lot about University life, many news and interesting facts.
The new exposition about the history of our University is made in our museum.
What's more there are some other clubs: sports club "Big Man", "Chess- club", "Literature club", "Club of history-fanciers", etc.
Total number of students, taking part in work of these clubs is more than 500.
We pay special attention to the health care at USTU. There is the Health center in campus providing a range of medical services. Over 500 students annually attend the Health Center for medical procedures and prophylactics. There is a surgery and a dentist room in the University's main building.
USTU owns a recreation camp "Sadovka" in the country-side on the Volga. Over 1,000 teachers and students visit the camp in summer, the cost of two-week staying is USD 160.
There are several canteens with total 300 seats, six buffets and a student cafe on 75 seats.
Each student hostel has offices of hire services, laundries, rest rooms. There is also a sports complex that has separate gymnasiums for games, athletic sports and gymnastics.
There exists an effective organizing system which provides the priority of the development of information technology means in all the academic directions and specialities.
Within the bounds of realizing process of information science program for 1995-97 the faculty of information systems and technologies was created. On this faculty is focused the preparing of specialists in information and computers, information systems in economics and informative- calculation complex.
During the previous years computer base was enlarged and renewed. Nowadays we have more
than 550 computers (including more than 190 "Pentiums" and PC-486) 33 computer classrooms, most
of them are recruited with the multimedia equipment.
The University has a Center of telecommunications, that provides connections with the help
of Internet with 150 of working places, including those in auditoria. It is habitual to use E-mail in our
University. Nowadays the real number of E-mail users is more than 200. A corporate
telecommunication net of the University made on the optical fibre that provides connections with all of
the computer classrooms and computers in labs and departments into the united information space
connected with Internet. The center of telecommunications is connected with the federal center of
RUNNET and to RBNet.
